Marinas and boatyards can be high risk environments where there are multiple dangers such as hot works (welding, grinding) to moving vessels around. When the general public are involved the risk increases further since they can do the most surprising things.
The JH 143 'Warranty Risk Assessment 'was introduced by the Joint Hull Committee at Lloyd’s in 2003 to evaluate a shipyard before any construction or repairs. Guidance was given into the areas that should be investigated such as geographical and environmental risks, processes and procedures to managing sub-contractors. Once completed, recommendations are made and a grading system is applied for consistency.
Insurers can request a yard survey for various reasons. For instance, if there have been a significant amount of claims or as part of due diligence when underwriting a refit/new build. I have surveyed yards around the world and since this is the environment I am always working in. I am aware of the risks since I have seen or investigated when things have gone wrong.
