Pre-Purchase Survey

Know what you are buying

Pre-purchase surveys are a vital part of process in buying a boat as it assesses the structural integrity and systems on board. The objective is to provide a detailed report and recommendations to work that should be completed immediately and part on ongoing maintenance.

These recommendations can then be used to negotiate on the purchase price or develop a plan for required work.

In addition, I will highlight and recommend points pertaining to safety and general maintenance so it makes a great starting point for your ownership.

Scope of Pre-purchase Survey

The objective is to identify the defects, damage and areas requiring maintenance. Tangible testing through Sovereign Quantum moisture meter, electrical multi-meter, salinity meter, borescope, rig tension gauges, etc.

Sea trials can offer a great deal of information in terms of the condition of the vessel. Engines can be run, navigational equipment checked and sails inspected (if present).

Survey Day and Report

A survey is a normally a full day on board, clients are welcome to attend but might get roped into emptying a locker or two. Ideally, being there at the end of the day can be advantageous as it means any issues can be gone through.

The report is a factual document which can be shared with other parties, boats do have issues and it can be used as a negotiation.
