Extensive experience in surveying small wooden boats to Superyachts.
These surveys assess the structural integrity, mechanical and electrical systems of the vessel. I will always endeavour to inspect every compartment and test all that can be tested. Experienced in all construction materials, although most small craft are GRP, I teach wooden boat surveying and through my work on superyachts I am experienced in steel, aluminium and carbon fibre. I pride myself on reporting on facts in order to allow my clients to make an informed decision. Engines will always be run when possible, rig tensions taken and hidden areas viewed using a borescope.
I am most often around the on south coast namely the Hamble, Beaulieu, Chichester to Poole so if you are considering a vessel I can often pop by for a quick look or to have a chat about your requirements.
Fundamentally a condition survey where all aspects of the vessel are checked or tested to ensure you know what you are buying. In addition, I will highlight and recommend points pertaining to safety and general maintenance so it makes a great starting point for your ownership.
Sea trials can offer a great deal of information in terms of the functionality of the vessel, especially the engine. This is always recommended for motor boats as the engine/s are a high cost item and can leave you in a predicament in the case of a breakdown. For sailing boats, it gives me the chance to run the engine, but also see how the sails set and navigation systems such as the autopilot work.
I will always endeavour to check every locker and test all that can be tested, I always test the cookers and you would be surprised how many issues are found. I go in with a thirty odd page template that I have developed over the years to ensure I capture all I can. Photographs are taken so you can see any issues and they are clearly explained so they can be negotiated on as required.
Insurance surveys are often required by insurance companies when the policy is taken out and periodically to check the condition of the vessel. They will then require any recommendations made by the surveyor to be actioned. For those that know me, may think I am overly safety conscious, but I sail with my wife and young daughter so I like to minimise risk which allows me to relax and really enjoy the time on the water as I have done all I can within reason. As an experience sailor I have been in rough weather and have investigated incidents when things have gone wrong, which sometimes could have been avoided. Basically, I will share all my experience and knowledge to making your time on the water as enjoyable and safe as possible.
As an independent surveyor I can carry out most kinds of surveys as per your requirements, whether it is to assess the damage after a collision or grounding to assessing some work you have had done to a poor level, please contact me for advice or quote.
